GAEF Awards Gettysburg Area School District Funds
to Expland the Genius Hour Program
Three 5th grade teachers (one from each building) from Gettysburg Area School District are expanding Genius Hour offerings in their buildings. The Instructional Coaching staff, along with some other support teachers will assist with the implementation of a grant received in the amount of $12,500 from the Robert C. Hoffman Charitable Endowment Trust on behalf of The Gettysburg Area Education Foundation (GAEF).
Genius Hour, a project created by Google to encourage employee involvement, is a 21st Century Learning practice that allows students to explore their own passions and encourages creativity in the classroom for a portion of their school week. The project encourages research and integrates STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) learning opportunities with freedom for the student to choose any school appropriate topic. The program can be completed with or without funding; however, the grant will allow students to choose topics that wouldn't have been possible without certain equipment and resources. After research, development and creation, students will present their final projects to the school and community.
