The Gettysburg School District supports a staff of 9 full time certified Music Educators.
In the Elementary schools, all students receive instruction in general music once a four day cycle for 45 minutes. General music provides opportunities for performance in grade level Fine Arts programs. All music students will learn the recorder in third grade and will continue to build instrumental skills on recorder throughout their elementary music experience.
Students may elect to participate in band, choir and orchestra beginning in 4th grade. Students in elementary band, orchestra and chorus will present district-wide concerts for the community. Advanced 5th grade band and orchestra students will participate in a 5/6 ensemble which will meet throughout the school year. Advanced orchestra and band students will participate in 2 concerts and 2 elementary tours during the school year. Advanced band will march in the Memorial Day parade.
The Gettysburg Middle School Curriculum offers students grades six through eight opportunities to participate in band, orchestra and choir. Students in an ensemble will receive ½ hour small group lessons along with an hour of ensemble instruction twice a four day cycle. Ensemble groups will perform at least three times a year and will have the opportunity to attend adjudications. Extra-curricular offerings include jazz band, string ensemble, and spring musical.
Gettysburg Middle School offers general music for students in 6th - 8th grade. Students will have the opportunity to explore guitar, ukulele, world-drumming and music technology.
At Gettysburg High School, students have the opportunity to participate in Symphonic Orchestra, Concert Band, Marching Band, Concert Choir, Chorus and Music Theory. All entering ensembles require teacher recommendation and/or an audition. Extra-curricular offerings include jazz band, string ensemble, spring musical, and ceremonial brass band. High School ensembles have traveled and competed throughout the United States and Europe.
Throughout its long history, Gettysburg students have advanced to Districts, Regionals, All-States, All-Eastern and National Ensembles. Gettysburg students have excelled in musical theater, have been placed in professional ensembles, have succeeded as music educators and have continued to play in their local communities.
Eric is joining the Music Staff at Gettysburg, teaching k-5th grade at James Gettys Elementary. Eric is a recent graduate of Lebanon Valley College, with a Bachelor of Science in Music Ed and a Bachelor of Arts in Trumpet Performance. Outside of music, Eric enjoys baseball and football.
Congratulations to Gettysburg High School students Ayaka Sato ( sophomore violinist) and Rebecca Negro ( junior vocalist) for auditioning and making it to the All-State Orchestra and Chorus Festival, and to Benjamin Shearer (senior bassist) for auditioning and participating in the All-East Orchestra Festival. The festival was held in Pittsburgh on April 6th and 7th. All three Gettysburg students auditioned last fall for districts and advanced to regional and state placement. Ben joined 11 states in making up the All-East Orchestra.
